What this deck covers

Feeding the Preterm Infant in 18 board-style clinical cases with worked explanations. Each case gives you a clinical vignette, four options, the correct answer, and an explanation of why each of the other three is wrong, with the guideline or textbook it follows named on the answer.

Board-style teaching questions for paediatricians and trainees preparing for paediatric board, MRCPCH and licensing examinations. Written from published guidelines and standard paediatric textbooks, with the source named on every answer.

The 18 cases, in order

  7. An antenatal scan, a week later
  8. Waiting for things to settle
  9. A net that is also a hazard
  10. Four weeks on the line
  11. Every millilitre, and still not growing
  12. Practising into exhaustion
  13. Counting towards a number
  14. Empty until the scan

Diagnoses and management options tested

Across the 18 cases you are asked to choose between options such as: Donor milk, A doubling each day, Growth alone, Full oral volumes, Start a course of antibiotics, The volume, A particular weight, That the stops are unrelated to the weight.

Clinical pearls from this deck

  • Start something in the gut on day one, however small.
  • When her milk is not there yet, bridge with donor milk.
  • A known step each day. Intolerance is only informative against one.
  • Going slower is not free. It is paid for in line days.
  • A milky residue is a fed stomach, not a warning.
  • Green plus a distended abdomen plus a flat baby is a stop.

Work through the deck once for recognition, then again a week later to test yourself — each question gives the answer and explains why every other option fails.
