What this deck covers

Infectious Disease – Set 4 in 50 board-style clinical cases with worked explanations. Each case gives you a clinical vignette, four options, the correct answer, and an explanation of why each of the other three is wrong, with the guideline or textbook it follows named on the answer.

Board-style teaching questions for paediatricians and trainees preparing for paediatric board, MRCPCH and licensing examinations. Written from published guidelines and standard paediatric textbooks, with the source named on every answer.

Diagnoses and management options tested

Across the fifty cases you are asked to choose between options such as: HIV antibody test on her blood, CD8 (cytotoxic) T lymphocytes, Epstein-Barr virus, None, as his symptoms began over 48 hours ago, Piperacillin-tazobactam plus vancomycin, Caspofungin, Airborne precautions in a negative-pressure room, Encephalitis from the same virus, Change to oral fluconazole, Through the air over long distances only, Stage 3, because of her persistent oral thrush, IgM antibody on a serum sample, IV clindamycin alone, Give on schedule, with extra pneumococcal doses.

Clinical pearls from this deck

  • Under 18 months, test for the virus (PCR), not the antibody.
  • Fever and neutropenia on chemotherapy: antibiotic within the hour, not after the count or the cultures.
  • Swelling of both parotids pushing the earlobes out is mumps until proved otherwise.
  • HIV is a disease of the CD4 cell.
  • RSV rides on hands: clean them before and after every touch.
  • Pneumocystis pneumonia: high-dose co-trimoxazole for three weeks.

Work through the deck once for recognition, then again a week later to test yourself — each question gives the answer and explains why every other option fails.
