What this deck covers
Neuromuscular Disease and the Respiratory Pump in twelve illustrated clinical cases with worked explanations – case presentations built around clinical images, radiology, teaching illustrations and real laboratory data, with the reference range beside every value a case quotes. What this deck teaches
- Normal lung, failing pump. Both volumes down with a preserved ratio is restriction, not asthma.
- Measure vital capacity lying down too. A fall over a fifth points at the diaphragm, and it is the measurement most often skipped.
- A borderline cough when well is an absent cough when ill. Below 270 litres per minute, arrange clearance before the infection.
- It fails at night first. Sleep removes accessory support; REM leaves only the diaphragm.
- Ask about sleep, not breathlessness. Morning headache and falling school performance are respiratory symptoms here.
- Start ventilation on symptoms and the sleep study. A normal daytime gas is not permission to wait.
Exam pearls from this deck
- Both volumes down with a preserved ratio is restriction. In neuromuscular disease the lung is fine and the pump is not.
- Weakness makes the curve, and the curve then makes the restriction worse. The two compound each other.
